A Place for Deeper Training... Traditional Martial Arts, Cultural Classes, Mind and Body Fitness
We are fortunate to train with instructors closely associated to the origins of Aikido. Our Aikido kyu and dan grades are recognized by Hombu Dojo in Japan. Our Director of Shugyo Cultural Center, Elisabeth Menning, started her training as Uchideshi (traditional live-in student) to Fumio Toyoda Shihan. This center was founded in his tradition and is dedicated to propagating his teachings. Shugyo Cultural Center is the home-base of Onshinkan Dojo, a member of Sosei Aikido Kyokai headed by Robert Garza who also trained with Fumio Toyoda Sensei and travels around the world studying and teaching Aikido..
Our Iaido program emphasizes the traditional practice and application of the techniques in the Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu curriculum encompassing the practice of waza (solo techniques).
"Shugyo" is a Japanese term with no direct translation into English. It can refer to the deepest level of training, where the student takes what they learn "on the mat" into other aspects of their daily lives. It takes energy, mindfulness, dedication, repetition, consistency, and concentration. It may involve intentional, sincere effort to push beyond one's perceived boundaries. It is a stage which usually develops naturally as one stays on a path of discovery.
The emphasis in all our programs is on each art as a practice, a deepening, a self-reflection, a path of self-improvement and of positive change - not just as sport or physical activity. Yet each of these programs can be physically intense, provide great exercise, and help one build up a good sweat.
